In order to sustainably deal with the prevailing imbalance between the housing shortage in metropolises and the emptying of smaller and medium-sized towns, we not only have to densify the big cities, but above all make our smaller towns more attractive again. A city like Krefeld, once a rich, beautiful city with a thriving textile industry, is now looking for new ways to attract young, educated citizens. The facade analysis was the first part of the excercise. The design for a gap in the urban
structure is generated from typological considerations in accordance with façade compositions, which can be generated equally from the typology as well as from the street and urban structure.
